Boy Makes

Psssssst…

There’s a buzz in the air! I promise you it’s not coming from my computer but the fast approaching Elsie Marley Kids Clothing Week Challenge. It’s hard to pick what I’ve been looking forward to the most. There’s the hot pot of inspiring sewing to be discovered in the KCWC flickr pool. Then there’s the thrill of your own challenge…how much sewing can one get done in one week, without things going to complete you know what around you. But what I love the most is knowing everywhere, normally functional, responsible mothers are turning themselves into crazy sewing ladies for a whole week.

Every KCWC I watch in awe as fellow sewers and bloggers systematically, calmly and probably with clean kitchens, churn out  beautiful garments day after day after day. Me, I like to go for the all or nothing approach. My first KCWC was manic. I managed one a day for the first three, got burnt out, sewed nothing until day 6, decided there was still plenty of time. And sewed my finger. Last KCWC, I had bigggg plans. We were in another town, in someone else’s house and in the end sanity and sleep won out.

This time I’m adopting a new plan… fabric is cut, sewing nook is organized. No signs of that Mad Sewing Lady yet. I’ll be attempting four outfits and a bonus one. So if by day five I can still wade through debris to my sewing machine and all fingers are in tact, there’s still two days left to attempt the bonus outfit. Sounds sensible? Achievable? I hope so, though these little doodles are looking deceptively simple on paper. There’s a re-fashion, a new pattern I’ve been wanting to try, two self-drafted experiments and another bloody manligan. Hope to see y’all in the pool!

Blithering blazers

You can always rely on kids to bring you back to reality. I made a mini blazer for my littlest boy, who is 17 months. And when I say made, we know that’s really code for slaving away, pouring love and sweat into it. I just loved it! And it looked ridiculously cute on him in the one minute he wore it before writhing about on the floor like a dolphin in a net. Funny, he had the same reaction the other day when I put him in overalls, which I thought were pretty loose and unrestrictive as clothes go. He just clawed at the shoulder straps and bleated. I think it must be the feeling of anything weighty or restrictive on him. Fusspot! So it seems stretchy/ light clothes are the way to go. I’ll just take my blazer lovin elsewhere, thank you very much.

Fabric: The circus fabric I bought from Etsy from this seller and it was listed as ‘3-ring-circus’ in blue and I think its a linen/ cotton blend and possibly Kokka. The lining is thrifted denim which was also used for the self-cover buttons. A great thing about this pattern is how much fun you can have with customizing and this time I went for a contrast colour for the collar instead of piping. Equally dapper and a different look altogether.

This was seriously the best we got prior to dolphin impersonation.

French Fry

There’s a bit of seasonal sewing confusion around here.  I’m celebrating spring sewing along with the Northern hemisphere while also starting to think about winter sewing. Its baking outside, the boys need shirts and shorts and mummy is churning out…Manligans, again from this pattern. So I’ve come to the happy conclusion that I will just sew what I like when I like and count myself lucky our seasons are mild and I’m not sewing out of necessity. Just so no-one is under any illusions, these boys don’t swan around in mummy’s little hipster outfits all day. Mostly they prefer no clothes. Yup, I’m raising a brood of streakers.
Last week Mexico, this week we’re feeling frenchy with stripes and little wooden buttons. I love this fabric, the label on the sweater says cotton but it feels like really soft wool. I’m not sure how to explain it lusciousness. Since it began as an adult sized sweater, I really should have re-fashioned it into a cardigan for me! The under shirt is also a men’s tee re-fashion. I didn’t use a pattern for the shirt, but chopped up one of Archie’s size 4 shirts into all the parts: sleeves, front, back and neck ribbing. From there it was as simple as tracing the parts onto the men’s shirt and hijacking the ribbing too, which saves effort. Go the hack job!

Show-stopper blazer

Hey there! My biggest boy just turned four, which seems to me like a good age for a boy to start sporting a cool blazer. Or at least own one. I’ve been swooning over cute little boys blazers popping up on Pinterest and looking around for a pattern to match. When I’m looking for new boy sewing inspiration I like to hunt around Etsy. I’ve haven’t been disappointed yet and it’s turned up some real goodies, like the Manligans, monkey pants, urban hoodie, kimino hoodie, newsboy cap, pea coat, hooded coat…come to think of it, about the only boys patterns that haven’t come from etsy are the Oliver and S patterns. On one such search I came across this Toddler blazer by Melly Sews, and it’s cute as punch…

Okay, can you just give me a moment to bask in the glory of my very first, never to be repeated, SINGLE WELT POCKETS!! In case you’re skimming over this and missed it…I am a little proud of my SINGLE WELT POCKETS! The pattern doesn’t include pockets, and it’s certainly not lacking without them, but I really wanted to add something special to the front, since I’d gone to the effort of making piping from the lining fabric. I used this single welt pocket tutorial ( which is great), labored over the instructions and plunged in with no practice run. It was late. I was tired. And the reckless sewer came out. Right now, I’m still not sure what to feel more thrilled about…deciphering the tutorial or the fact that it worked spectacularly! It’s definitely given me confidence to try some more ‘technical’ sewing in the future. Just for fun, of course.

Hootylicious

Pattern:  90 minute shirt tutorial from here
Fabric: women’s tee +  ribbing
Short and sweet post today. I made this for Archie’s little mate, who just turned 4. He’s into owls and I happened to have this thrifted tee in the cut-up clothes pile. I only had small window of sewing time and needed a quickie of the best kind so I turned to the ever-faithful 90 minute shirt, also seen here and here and maybe here. It’s a real confidence builder too when your sewjo needs a boost. Though now its finished I really want to keep it. Is that possibly the lowest form of indian giving, the one in which you don’t even give the present? So I posted it right here where I won’t get away with my crime, since there’s a good chance our little friend’s mummy is reading this…
